European Commission communication of 14 January 2020 on its priorities in the field of employment and social affairs in 2020

Brussels (Belgium), 14.01.2020

Monday 27 January 2020

A strong social Europe for just transitions

The whole of action fields announced by the Commission can only have our approval as European Trade Union Federation concerned with the welfare of workers in the sector of public services as these are organised and operate in the EU member states as well as the EU candidate countries.

The core business of Eurofedop are the trade councils and the topics that employees of public services are specially concerned with at a given time in a given sector.

When speaking about transitions, digitalisation, green deal and demographic change are the key words.

The digital transformation is an evolution with great impact in sectors such as postal services and telecommunications. Postal operators see their core activity change from letter delivery to parcel delivery. Simultaneously, new work contracts appear, in which the social protection of workers is not guaranteed.

The digital transformation is also a matter of great importance to the sector of ministries, that are in the midst of adapting themselves to the digital society. In order to cope with the new requirements, the need for skills also affects public services that, on these grounds; welcome the Digital Education Action Plan and updated Skills Agenda for Europe, announced by the Commission.

Ageing and demographic change are matters of great interest to assuring the quality of public services. European gender equality, the further promotion of social dialogue and collective bargaining, the green deal, the youth guarantee, the planning of a Summit to discuss the problems linked with platform work are other issues that have the ongoing attention of trade unions representing employees of public services.

Eurofedop continues to support the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights, the ambitious project launched by the European Commission in 2017 to give the European Union a stronger social dimension.
